Green from the get-go
In 2006, Two Bettys was founded on the idea that people should be able to make a good living without endangering their health or the health of the planet.
Founders Anna and Sam researched the ingredients in household cleaning products, and were shocked by what they learned—like how harmful a common household cleaner like chlorine bleach can be. Two Bettys has been committed to using non-toxic, eco-friendly cleansers ever since.
Sam passed away in 2013, and Anna became the sole leader of Two Bettys. She continues the mission of using only eco-friendly cleaning products and ensuring that Bettys don’t interact with any toxic chemicals that would be harmful to their health.
Always upping our green game
In 2017, we started a year-long initiative to re-evaluate all of our cleaning tools and products, because we knew we could do better. We learned words like myristyl glucoside (don’t worry, it comes from plants). We learned that companies don’t have to disclose the ingredients in any fragrances they use (hmm… smells suspicious to us). As more information becomes available, we keep learning it, and keep bettering our products – for our people and the planet.
We don’t just prioritize eco-friendly products for the planet – it’s also important to us that our cleaners aren’t breathing in toxic chemicals every day.
We committed to buying cleaning solutions in concentrate and diluting them ourselves on-site, which cuts down on plastic waste in a huge way. Each 55-gallon drum allows us to refill a bottle 20,000 times! This move also allowed us to cut back to just one supply delivery per year, which reduces our carbon footprint.
Two Bettys eliminated one product whose complete ingredient list was oddly hard to track down. And we were happy to discover that two of our favorite products are manufactured by a company with a carbon-neutral manufacturing facility that pays its employees a living wage. Sweet!
The Two Bettys Refill Station
In 2017, we officially opened our Refill Station on East Lake Street. This storefront space allows us to store 55-gallon drums of concentrated cleanser, as well as more tools and supplies than we had room to store previously. This means we’re shopping in bulk, which reduces the amount of shipping and therefore carbon emissions. We keep our cleaners fully-equipped and ready to clean your home, while minimizing our environmental impact.
From the cloth napkins at HQ to the recycled plastic bottles we refill with cleaning solution, Two Bettys continues to find new and better ways to stay eco-friendly. We don’t think it’s naïve to say that by cleaning houses and businesses, we can change the world.
